Statement of intent
How do you intend to use the four areas of the
media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of
the chosen brief? (approx. 500 words)
I intend to make my music video for the song, "New Romantics," which will be a mixture of narrative and performance based and conveys the idea of living life to the fullest and having fun. The female protagonist will be conveyed as someone who is carefree and confident. This will be achieved through representing her as spontaneous, bubbly, outgoing and assertive. The music video evokes the idea of friendship which is a convention of pop music videos in terms of relationships, furthermore, this will be achieved in an illustrative manner.
Reflecting on Roland Barthes theory of semiotics, there are a variety of vivid and vibrant colours present in the music video which meets the requirements of one of the chosen briefs which is to aim at a fun loving 16-25 year old audience demographic, as well as, adhering to the convention of pop music videos. The vivid and vibrant colours will be visible in my locations such as 'King's Cross Tunnel,' which consists of a makeup of neon lights. Each colour connotes contrasting traits, furthermore, an example is white which connotes; purity, innocence and goodness which equates to the persona of the main character. Throughout the music video, there will be clips of the main character alongside her friends showcasing them as laughing and messing around which creates a fun loving atmosphere as it is one of the requirements of the brief.
On the other hand, the choice of apparel within the music video will give of bohemian and festival vibes. There will be a slightly sexualised portrayal of the main character to make her appear as more prominent and attract the male gaze. Applying Steve Neale's theory, I will be subverting the representations of the female co-star by making her appear as a tomboy, classy and chic in order to make my video appear as unique and highlight the different social groups. Finally, the male character will be represented as free spirited and will dress up in casual clothing so he does not overpower the representation of the main character.
The camera shots will be used stylistically as the medium close up shots and close up shots emphasise the emotions through the facial expressions and gestures. The use of close up shots is a common convention of pop music videos as it conveys the persona of the character and allows the audience to emotionally connect to what the character is feeling.
The intertextuality will be used from popular romantic, comedy and teenage movies. For example, the dance scene from 'The Breakfast Club.' This pastiche will follow the conventions of pop music videos and postulate an eccentric atmosphere. Intertextuality from old movies would also create a sense of nostalgia for an older audience.
Finally, my music video will be shot using a low budget. The main spending will be on costumes and food for my cast. New Romantics is a mainstream song, therefore, the audience would be able to recognize the track by Taylor Swift who is extremely popular.
